About me

Matthew is a transmedia artist who creates experiences that critically examine social, political, and cultural issues. He is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Interactive Arts (Art and Technology) at Pratt Institute, with an expected graduation date of May 2024. Prior to his graduate studies, Matthew earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art from Nanjing University of Post and Telecommunication and has 8 years of experience in the Digital Media field.

Fascinated by the potential of emerging technologies, Matthew’s recent work explores the intersection of art, artificial intelligence, and mixed reality. His graduate thesis, “Nonlinear Evolution,” combines a Mixed Reality environment with AI-generated content (AIGC). The project performs speech recognition, text-to-speech conversion, and text-to-scene conversion within the Unity environment, proposing that evolution is non-linear and aiming to create scenes where viewers can generate imaginative worlds. Matthew will present his thesis using Apple Vision Pro (AVP), showcasing his expertise in developing for this cutting-edge mixed reality platform.

Beyond his thesis, Matthew actively engages with AVP development, leveraging his own AVP to explore new frontiers in immersive storytelling and interactive art. His artistic practice references public issues, delving into the contradictions between humanity, nature, and science. His current work-in-progress seeks to embody anti-apathy through the use of emojis and appropriation, inviting the viewer into a parallel universe as complex as our own, where emojis form a society that may ironically distort images or elements from the real world. Drawing inspiration from ironic film, television, and surrealist photography, Matthew’s work challenges viewers to question their perceptions and assumptions.

Through his innovative use of AI, mixed reality, and transmedia storytelling, Matthew aims to create immersive experiences that spark critical reflection and dialogue about the social, political, and cultural issues shaping our world. As he completes his graduate studies at Pratt Institute, Matthew continues to push the boundaries of art and technology, developing a unique artistic voice that engages with the complexities of our rapidly evolving digital landscape.
